I've been living abroad in different countries for years, and I think it's made me mighty prickly about the "ha ha, Americans are stupid" stereotype. America has a lot of problems, but stupid isn't one of them. Shallow (as in, superficial), maybe, but that's just the lid clamped down on a whole cauldron of roiling dysfunction and discontent.
And as we all know, dysfunction and discontent are made for writing. ♥
